ATHLETE CAMPAIGN GUIDE

How to book an athlete for a brand campaign.

To book an athlete for a brand campaign, define what you need them to deliver, choose a name whose audience and reputation fit your brand, check for sponsor conflicts, make a credible offer to their team, and agree deliverables, usage rights and exclusivity in a reviewed contract. Here is how each step works.

The process at a glance

This guide is written by Sünde Entertainment, a Miami-based talent booking agency whose founder has spent more than 12 years booking athletes, speakers and entertainers in over 30 countries, including campaigns and appearances with names from soccer, basketball and the Olympics. It walks through the process we run for brands, so you know what a well-run athlete deal looks like.

  1. ObjectiveWhat the campaign must achieve.
  2. DeliverablesPosts, shoot days, appearances.
  3. FitAudience, values and reputation.
  4. BudgetFee plus usage, travel and production.
  5. ConflictsExisting sponsors and team rules.
  6. OfferA credible offer to the athlete’s team.
  7. ContractRights, exclusivity, approvals.

Step by step

1

Define the campaign objective

Start with what the athlete is there to do for your brand: launch a product, reach a new market, add credibility to a category, drive sales during a season or create buzz around an event. The objective decides whether you need a global star, a local hero or a niche specialist whose followers trust them.

2

List the deliverables

Be specific about what you are buying. Common deliverables are social posts and stories, a content or photo shoot day, a TV or online commercial, in-person appearances, a launch event, meet and greets, and longer brand ambassador roles across a season. Every extra deliverable and every extra hour of the athlete’s time affects the fee, so a clear list leads to a clear price.

3

Choose an athlete who truly fits

Look at who follows the athlete and where, how engaged that audience is, the sport’s popularity in your market, and how the athlete’s personality and values match your brand. Check their off-field reputation carefully: a campaign lives or dies on credibility.

This is where experience matters. We know which athletes fit which kinds of brands and audiences, and we aren’t tied to a roster, so we recommend the names that genuinely suit your campaign.

4

Set a realistic budget

Athlete campaigns typically range from about $100,000 to $1 million+, depending on the athlete and the scope of the campaign. The biggest price drivers are the athlete’s profile, the number of deliverables, and the usage rights: how long, where and in which media you can use the content. Travel, production and agency costs come on top.

Because we already have a clear picture of estimated fees, we can tell you right away which names your budget can realistically reach.

5

Check for sponsor and team conflicts

Most well-known athletes already have sponsors, and those deals often include category exclusivity. A footwear or sports drink brand, for example, may block a competitor. Team and league rules can also limit what an athlete can do in season, and team logos, uniforms and league marks usually can’t be used without separate permission. Spot these issues before you make an offer, not after.

6

Make a credible offer to the athlete’s team

Athletes are represented by agents and managers who receive far more requests than they can take. The offers that get answered are clear and credible: the brand, the objective, the deliverables, dates, usage, and a realistic fee range.

This is where booking through Sünde makes the biggest difference. We know most of the representatives personally and have worked with them on previous campaigns and events. Because we are selective about the opportunities we bring them, an offer from us tells the athlete’s team it is serious, vetted and worth their time. That credibility gets faster answers and better terms.

7

Agree the contract terms

The agreement should cover the fee and payment schedule, each deliverable with dates, usage rights (term, territory and media), exclusivity, content approval rights for both sides, social media requirements such as disclosure of paid partnerships, cancellation and rescheduling, a morals clause, and travel and hospitality. Don’t announce the partnership until the contract is signed.

At Sünde, every agreement is reviewed by a Florida-based attorney before anyone signs. If an international athlete needs a US visa for an appearance, start early; we can refer you to experienced immigration attorneys.

8

Activate the campaign and measure it

Share a creative brief and schedule early, keep approvals moving, and assign one person to look after the athlete on shoot and appearance days. Track the results against your objective: reach, engagement, traffic, sales or leads. Good results make the next deal easier to negotiate.

Athlete campaign questions

How do I book an athlete for a brand campaign?

Define the campaign objective and deliverables, choose an athlete whose audience and reputation fit your brand, set a budget that includes usage rights and travel, check for existing sponsor and team conflicts, make a credible offer to the athlete's agent or manager, and agree deliverables, usage, exclusivity and approvals in a reviewed contract.

How much does it cost to book an athlete for a campaign?

Athlete campaigns typically range from about $100,000 to $1 million+, depending on the athlete and the scope of the campaign. The main price drivers are the athlete's profile, the number of deliverables and the usage rights (how long, where and in which media the content can be used).

What are usage rights in an athlete deal?

Usage rights define how your brand can use the content the athlete creates or appears in: for how long (the term), in which countries (the territory) and in which media, such as social, online ads, TV, print or packaging. Wider and longer usage costs more, so it should be agreed precisely in the contract.

Can I use team logos or uniforms in an athlete campaign?

Usually not without separate permission. Team logos, uniforms and league marks belong to the team or league, so an individual athlete deal normally covers the athlete's name, image and likeness only.

Why book an athlete through Sünde Entertainment?

Sünde knows which athletes fit a brand and audience, has a clear picture of estimated fees, and knows most athlete representatives personally from previous campaigns and events. Because Sünde is selective about the opportunities it brings to talent, an offer through Sünde gives the brand credibility with the athlete's team. Every agreement is reviewed by a Florida-based attorney.

How far in advance should I book an athlete?

For campaigns with shoot days, plan two to three months ahead and work around the athlete's competition schedule. Simple appearances can sometimes be secured in as little as 48 to 72 hours when the athlete is available.
